It’s a triptych mix of boisterous branch dancing, Javanese Gamelan and cello; playful tree song with meditative stick balancing; and a sinuous willow-water movement and soundscape. There will also be a chance to share tree memories, and other experiences to heighten our sense of interconnection with trees.

This environmental performance is a collaboration between INSITU choreographer and performer Cynthia Stevens, improvisational cellist Sera Smolen, and Gamelan artist warbling elephant aka Christopher J. Miller, with dancer and singer Emily Healy.

Gather at our welcome table in Jackson Grove at the intersection of Arboretum Drive and Arbor Road/ Weeping Willow Way. The audience will be guided between three sites featuring the magnificent trees of the Jackson Grove, and the sublime waterscape of Houston Pond.

Arboretum Drive entrance off of Caldwell Rd.: continue straight and park at the two parking lots near Houston Pond and walk back (west) along Arboretum Road until you reach the intersection with Arbor Road; or you can turn left off Arboretum Road onto Arbor Road and park just downhill at the Treman Woodland Walk parking lot on Arbor Road (or overflow parking in the lot near the Forest Home entrance) and walk back uphill to the welcome table near the intersection of Arbor Road (Weeping Willow Way) and Arboretum Road.

Forest Home Drive entrance: enter and turn right on Arbor Road (a loop); continue on the same road until you reach a T. You can turn left and head back down the hill towards the entrance. There will be a parking lot on your left at the Treman Woodland Walk or overflow parking near where you entered. Walk back up the hill to reach the welcome table OR from the T you can also access Arboretum Road and the Houston Pond parking lots by turning right then immediately left.

Masayoshi Yamada is a Klarman Postdoctoral Fellow in Music and History. His research examines the intersection of popular music and social change, with an emphasis on the political potential of the listening public. Masa's book project explores the history of jazz fandom and the role of music enthusiasts in advancing racial justice in the United States and beyond. With a PhD in U.S. history from UCLA, he was previously a University of California President's Postdoctoral Fellow at UC Santa Cruz, a Visiting Assistant Professor at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Temple University, Japan Campus.

Francesca Brittan is Associate Professor of Music and Affiliated Faculty in the Dpt. of Cognitive Science at Case Western Reserve University. Her first scholarly article, published while a graduate student at Cornell, dwelt on music’s relationship with nineteenth-century psychological theory, casting Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique as an articulation of the over-focused Romantic mind. Since then, questions around orchestral cognition, cognitive orchestration, auditory attention/distraction, and sonic conceptions of consciousness have continued to mobilize her. She is the author of Music and Fantasy in the Age of Berlioz (Cambridge, 2017) and co-editor of Berlioz and His World (Chicago, 2024) and The Attentive Ear: Sound, Cognition and Subjectivity in the Long Nineteenth Century (Penn, 2026). Her current book, The Audible Brain: A Resonant History of Cognition, ranges from Descartes to cybernetics, tracing the central role of sonic processes, instruments, and ideologies in generating neurophysiological and cognitive theory. Portions of this project have appeared in JAMS (“The Neural Orchestra: Cognitive Instrumentalities,” 2024); others have been fostered by research collaboratives, especially the Music and Attention Working Group hosted by Carmel Raz at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics (Frankfurt). More recently, the project has relied on practical experimentation undertaken by CWRU’s Brain Media Lab, a music-neuroscience-engineering initiative founded by Brittan and for which she serves as PI. Hear from Andrew C. Weislogel, the Museum’s Seymour R. Askin, Jr. ’47 Curator, Earlier European and American Art; French Baroque music and dance expert Rebecca Harris-Warrick; and pianist and piano scholar Patricia Garcia Gil as they connect the visual art, history, and music of the era in the Robinson Lecture Hall on Floor 2L.

At 1:30PM, this program will be followed by a historical dance workshop in the Lynch Conference Room on Floor 6 led by Julia Bengtsson of the New York Baroque Dance Company, accompanied by students from the Cornell Symphony Orchestra. No experience is required to participate.

The concerto foregrounds music-making as a playful social act: a lively exchange of imitation, response, wit, and shared virtuosity. The program also includes Vivaldi’s Concerto for Strings in D Major, RV 121 and selections from Mozart’s Les petits riens, where music enters the world of ballet-pantomime: gesture, movement, character, flirtation, and comic timing. Inspired by the mischievous theatricality that runs through Mozart’s music, this performance will set Les petits riens back into motion, rearranging numbers not securely attributed to Mozart in unexpected ways and allowing playful collisions between sound worlds to emerge.

In recent work, Amadeus explores what he calls the “erotics” of sound production, or how a body, as a physical form and as a container for personal experience, is a nexus for a multiplicity of possible meanings. His current practice stems from the belief that each body is physically unique and comes with its own manifold history which can and should be expressed in the music. Amadeus sees the work of music as finding and cultivating lyricism while foregrounding the [physical] struggle that creates it. Inspired and educated by the musical modernism of the 20th century, Amadeus wishes to expand the genre’s potential as an expressive tool for composers beyond its origins. His work is often developed in close collaborations with performers which provoke conversations about consent and trust, complicity and gaze, and power dynamics in performance.
