http://rmc.library.cornell.edu/wernerpfeiffer #werner_pfeiffer_book-objects_and_artist_booksCornell University Library invites you to view the exhibition “Book-Objects and Artist Books,” in the Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections’ Hirshland Gallery, featuring the work of distinguished book artist Werner Pfeiffer. A sculptor, printmaker, and painter, Pfeiffer is known for his provocative book-objects and artist books, work that offers insightful reflection on the role of physical books in the twenty-first century.
Born in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1937, he has lived in the United States since 1961. He was appointed Professor of Art at Pratt Institute in New York City in 1969. His books, collages, drawings, prints, paintings, and sculptures have been shown internationally in nearly 200 group and solo exhibitions.
From the deconstructed book to the censorship of books, and how the electronic environment has influenced the resurgence of the handmade book, themes in his work explore how the book occupies space and time, and serves as a vehicle of the sensory experience.
The Samuel L. Hirshland Gallery is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For Saturday hours, check the Library Web site for updates at www.library.cornell.edu. The exhibition will be on view until February 25, 2011.
The exhibition and associated events are made possible by the Stephen E. and Evalyn Edwards Milman Exhibition Fund.
