The ULI Hines Student Competition, now in its 18th year, is part of the Urban Land Institute's ongoing education initiative to raise interest among students in creating better communities, improving development patterns, and increasing awareness of the need for multidisciplinary solutions to development and design challenges. The competition encourages cooperation and teamwork among students studying urban planning, real estate, architecture, historic preservation, business, and landscape architecture.
Students take part in the competition in teams of five, representing at least three different degree programs. Once ULI announces the host city and challenge on the first day of the competition, the teams have two weeks to create a comprehensive design and development program for an actual large-scale site. ULI then chooses four finalist teams to further develop their proposals and present their work to a jury. The grand prize winner receives $50,000; the three other finalist teams each receive $10,000.
At Cornell, students take part in the ULI Hines Student Competition through the course CRP 6596/6597, taught by Assistant Professor Suzanne Lanyi Charles and Graduate Teaching Research Specialist Lera Covington (M.P.S. RE/M.R.P '20).
This year, ULI selected Cubikko as one of four finalists from 113 submissions. The team is made up of Jing Cheng (M.A. HPP '21); Yu Wu (M.R.P. '20); Oscar Portillo, business administration; Guangwei Ren, Columbia University; and Lijia Zhu, Cornell Baker Program in Real Estate. The team will refine their project and present it to the jury in Miami on April 7.
