Tropical corn breeding: Some Brazilian issues
Tuesday, February 7, 2017 12:20pm to 1:10pm
About this Event
In the last 20 years, Brazilian corn has faced a new and harsh reality. Its cultivation migrated from emperate regions during the Summer, to tropical regions during the Fall. Thus, characteristics such as earliness, cold and drought tolerance, and nitrogen use efficiency have become even more important. Furthermore, there is a need for a “new germplasm” and accurate methods for the rapid development of cultivars compatible with these new demands. In this context, we have developed our projects trying to address some of these problems, using different tools, from classical breeding to genomics selection. In this talk, we are going to present a general view of Brazilian agriculture, some results that we have obtained, and perspectives for the coming years. The Allogamous Plant Breeding Laboratory is located at the Department of Genetics, “Luiz de Queiroz” College of Agriculture, University of São Paulo, Brazil. We started our activities in 2013, giving continuity to the projects of Prof. José Branco Miranda Filho. http://www.genetica.esalq.usp.br/alogamas/index2.html
