DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Trimble (Associate Professor of Classics at Stanford U
 niversity) will be the Townsend Visiting Professor in Fall 2016.  She work
 s on the visual and material culture of the Roman Empire\, with interests 
 in portraits and replication\, the visual culture of Roman slavery\, compa
 rative urbanism\, and ancient mapping.  Her book on Women and Visual Repli
 cation in Roman Imperial Art and Culture (Cambridge University Press\, 201
 1) explores the role of visual sameness in constructing public identity an
 d articulating empire and place.  Trimble was co-director of the IRC-Oxfor
 d-Stanford excavations in the Roman Forum (now being prepared for publicat
 ion)\, focused on the interactions of commercial\, religious and monumenta
 l space.  She also co-directed Stanford's Digital Forma Urbis Romae Projec
 t\, a collaboration between computer scientists and archaeologists to help
  reassemble a fragmentary ancient map of the city of Rome.
