While LaTeX is one of the most popular tools for creating technical documents, the PDFs it produces are greatly lacking in accessibility features that are standard in many other programs. This workshop will provide an overview of strategies for increasing the accessibility of documents created with LaTeX, with an emphasis on making them compatible with screen readers. We will start with an introduction to some general accessibility best-practices when creating and sharing documents, as well as resources available at Cornell for supporting accessibility on campus. Then, we will give a guide to a few promising strategies for creating accessible documents with LaTeX and how you can integrate them into your teaching and research. We will focus on two main strategies: 1) PDF tagging and automatically generating alternate text for mathematical expressions in a language that meets accessibility standards; 2) converting LaTeX documents into accessible HTML. Additional topics will be covered if time permits. Only familiarity with LaTeX will be assumed.
