About this Event
The “Tobacco Harvesting Teach-In” is a chance for students to learn about the importance of the tobacco plant in Cayuga/Haudenosaunee culture. O-ye'gw'á-o-weh Gayogo̱hó:nǫ’, the Original Tobacco of the Cayuga Nation has been grown at Cornell’s Botanic Gardens for the past two years. Much care has been taken in the planting and growing of this plant, and now it is ready to be harvested. The harvesting techniques used in today’s teach-in include an emphasis on the use of a good mind by all of the harvesters. Other protocols that will be performed or described include the Ganǫhǫ́nyǫhk (Thanksgiving Speech).
The American Indian & Indigenous Studies Program invites you to participate in the Tobacco Harvest Teach-In with an explanation of the protocols by Karl Hill (Cayuga) and moderation by Kyrie Ransom (Akwesasne Mohawk).
