Edward D. Melillo is an assistant professor fo history at Amherst College, where he teaches courses on global environmental history and the history of the Pacific World. He is the author of the forthcoming book, Strangers on Familiar Soil: Rediscovering the Chile-California Connection. Professor Melillo has published widely on topics ranging from the roles of insect commodities in work history to the dramatic expansion of unfree labor regimes in nineteenth-century California
