Trusting Overtures

What does it mean to “decide to trust”? What is the moral and practical significance of such decisions? I give a characterization of “trusting overtures” in which one person positions themselves to be conspicuously vulnerable to another person with the aim of building a trusting relationship. I then offer an account of the distinctive risks that we face in trusting others, as well as the necessity of courage for trusting wisely.
