The Evolving Federal Policy over Genetically Engineered Crops: Issues Raised in 2015 and Potential Outcomes in 2016 and Beyond

Greg Jaffe, Center for Science in the Public Interest, will discuss recent federal initiatives involving the federal oversight of GE crops at the Office of Science and Technology Policy and the three regulatory agencies (USDA, FDA, and EPA) as well as Congressional actions. He will explain the goals of such activities, their timelines, and the range of potential outcomes. He will present the position of different stakeholders on those activities as well as his own perspective on the best way forward. Finally, he will briefly introduce the discussions surrounding new gene editing techniques and whether they will be captured by the current regulatory system for GE crops.
