Tuesday, September 27, 2022 12pm to 1pm
About this Event
Olin Library, Ithaca, NY 14850, USA
#bookconservationDan Paterson, senior book conservator at the Library of Congress, discusses the conservation treatment and digitization of 41 volumes of the Yongle Dadian. This Ming Dynasty-era encyclopedia was the largest of its kind in the world until it was surpassed by Wikipedia in 2007. Of the 11,100 manuscript volumes originally produced, only 400 volumes survive today. Five of these surviving volumes are in the Asia Collections of the Carl A. Kroch Library at Cornell. This hybrid talk, sponsored by Cornell University Library Conservation, will explore the materiality of the manuscripts and their unique preservation challenges.
