The Welfare Workforce: Why Mental Health Care Varies Across Affluent Democracies
Wednesday, November 19, 2025 4:30pm to 5:30pm
About this Event
Why do otherwise similar countries diverge so widely when it comes to mental health care and policy? Isabel Perera, assistant professor in the department of Government, explores this question in her new book The Welfare Workforce: Why Mental Health Care Varies Across Affluent Democracies (Cambridge University Press, 2025).
Join us for a Chats in the Stacks book talk where Perera will discuss the political factors that contribute to the success or failure of mental health care systems, based on her extensive research in the United States, France, Norway, and Sweden. Perera will show how post-industrial politics–in particular those who work for the welfare state–helped shape the differences in each country’s ability to provide care, and the broader implications for social service provision and policy.
This book talk is hosted by Olin Library.
