DESCRIPTION:Textile industry is an old industry but there is plenty of spac
e to innovate. One research topic going to shape our life and create new f
ashion is textile-based wearable electronics. As most textile engineering
or fiber science students know how to make fiber functional\, scalable man
ufacturing of functional fibers may not be easy. Also\, making various dai
ly textile products from functional fibers is another challenge. Further\,
how can we make good use of wearable electronics and what can we learn wi
th such wearable electronics. In this talk\, I will first show you scalabl
e manufacturing of tactile sensing fibers from simple materials with custo
mized setup\, and then make them into daily textile products through compu
tational design and digital machine knitting. Lastly\, I will show you how
we leverage machine learning to make our sensing textiles smart and use t
hem to study human-environment interaction. Besides\, I also would like to
briefly share some other research related to fibers and manufacturing.
