Abstract:
At least six moons in the outer solar system may harbor liquid water oceans. These oceans have likely persisted for much of the history of the solar system and as a result they are highly compelling targets in our search for life beyond Earth. Dr. Hand will present recent results on the physics and chemistry of the surfaces of two of these ocean worlds, Europa and Enceladus, and detail how their ice shells may provide a window into the chemistry of the oceans below. He will focus on the radiolytic processing of Jupiter’s moon Europa and connect laboratory spectroscopic measurements to ground and space-based observations of Europa’s surface.
