This seminar will cover the basics of generative AI tools and how they're widely used in various industries, including academic settings. We'll share our experiences from using AI in the FSAD4660 class during the Fall of 2023. In this class, students used AI to create images and understand scientific texts. They started with Midjourney and ChatGPT, and later used BingChat, Claude.ai, DALL-E, Jasper.ai, and Adobe’s Firefly and Sensei.
The course focused on understanding what generative AI can and can't do. Students kept a weekly blog and completed a final project to reflect on their experiences. For their final project, they had to make a poster using AI for all elements of the poster, a significant change from a traditional group project to an individual one with significantly less time for completion.
A morality professor joined the final presentations to talk about AI ethics. Students found AI useful but also recognized its flaws. They discussed how AI can misunderstand instructions and emphasized the importance of critically understanding AI's strengths and weaknesses. The posters they made with AI can be viewed at: https://blogs.cornell.edu/jh433/posters-fsad-4660-2023_-use-of-ai-tools/
This abstract and this image were created 100% by using generative AI tools.
