Soft Process, by Catherine Joseph (M.Arch. '16) and Sida Zhang (M.Arch. '17), is an installation of slip-cast ceramic that demonstrates the effect of material properties and the procedural parameters of the casting process in the form of the final pieces. The effect of these parameters has been accentuated by casting through a soft membrane that permits a controlled collapse according to the casting parameters. The pieces themselves demonstrate an amplification of the material and procedural parameters. This design and production process is primarily analog, but integrates digital components of fabrication as well, such as digital modeling for component design and 3D printing and milling for mold fabrication.
