"Scholarly Treasure: The Role of Gems in a University Setting"

EAS Spring Seminar given by Elise Skalwold, Gemologist. 

A one hour visual feast overviewing the author’s paper presented at the first-ever Gemological Session of the historic 125th Anniversary Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of America (GSA) held in Denver, Colorado in October 2013. Ms. Skalwold is co-author with Dr. William A. Bassett of the 415 page coffee-table book, "The Edward Arthur Metzger Gem Collection" which catalogs a fabulous gem collection given to Cornell in 2004. This presentation will include highlights of the Collection in the context of the overall theme of “Scholarly Treasure” (abstract: https://gsa.confex.com/gsa/2013AM/webprogram/Paper227842.html ).

Elise A. Skalwold, BSc, Class of 1982, is an Accredited Senior Gemologist, curator and author involved in research and curating in the Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Department and its Timothy N. Heasley Mineralogy Museum ( website: http://www.eas.cornell.edu/about/facilities/museum.cfm ) She is an active member of the Society of Mineral Museum Professionals (SMMP), a world-wide network linking curators from large and small institutions from which members draw on combined expertise. Her speaking engagements have recently included the New York Mineralogical Club (co-founded by George F. Kunz in 1886); the 11th Annual Sinkankas Symposium (Ruby) and the 40th Annual Rochester Mineralogical Symposium. She is author/co-author of gemology and mineralogy papers featured in InColor, Gems & Gemology, the Journal of Gemmology and Rocks & Minerals.
