Biography: Saadia Toor is Associate Professor of Sociology & Women’s Studies at the College of Staten Island, City University of New York. Her book The State of Islam: Culture and Cold War Politics in Pakistan published in 2011 by Pluto Press explored the history of Pakistan through the lens of its cultural politics, with an emphasis on the role of the Left. She has also written extensively on the importance of (neo) liberal discourses of gender and sexual rights in securing support for the War on Terror among progressives in both Pakistan and the 'West'. Toor is also co-editor of a special issue of Women's Studies Quarterly on the theme of Solidarity.
