Rose House - Café Talks - Michael Fontaine

Wednesday, March 27, 2019 at 7:00pm

Flora Rose House, House Professor Apartment
134 Gothics Way, Ithaca, NY 14853, USA

Binge drinking: Where does it come from, why do we do it, and what does it look like? - In this talk, Mike Fontaine discusses the origins of binge and bro culture in Renaissance Germany 500 years ago. Drawing on work from his latest book, he’ll explain when, how, and why the abuse of alcohol by both men and women came to be seen as a sign of he-man prowess, the origin and acceptance of competitive drinking games, and a fascinating fable one alarmed observer wrote to try to stop it all.
