ROCHESTER PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

Andreas Delfs, Music Director
Juliana Athayde, Violin (Concertmaster, The Caroline W. Gannett & Clayla Ward Chair, funded in perpetuity)

Since its founding by George Eastman in 1922, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra has been dedicated to artistic excellence and deeply committed to education and community engagement. Today, the RPO presents up to 120 concerts per year, serving nearly 170,000 people through performances, education, and community activities.

Opening the program is Felix Mendelssohn's charming overture to The Fair Melusine, a water sprite of European folklore. This is followed by a new violin concerto by acclaimed Cornell music professor Roberto Sierra, featuring concertmaster Juliana Athayde as soloist. Next is one of the Romantic period's first musical works, Schubert's unfinished Eighth Symphony. Finally, Johann Strauss's The Blue Danube conjures up dancers in extravagant costumes waltzing in even grander ballrooms.

PROGRAM:

MENDELSSOHN The Fair Melusine Overture

ROBERTO SIERRA Violin Concerto (world premiere)

SCHUBERT Symphony No. 8, "Unfinished"

J. STRAUSS, JR. An der schönen blauen Donau (On the Beautiful Blue Danube), Op. 314
