REGIONAL CRITICAL ECOLOGIES WORKSHOP 2025

Building on the success of last year’s inaugural workshop at SUNY-University at Buffalo, this year, it is being jointly organized by Cornell's Departments of Global Development and Natural Resources and the Environment.

The goal of the event is to learn about each other's work, cultivate connections across social and natural science disciplines, and explore how diverse research approaches and knowledge systems can come together. The event is primarily for PhDs, postdocs, faculty, and Research-Teaching-Extension members, regionally.

What is critical ecology? There is a spectrum of interpretations. While ecology is the study of the interaction between living and non-living things, critical ecology understands that history, politics, and social relations also shape ecosystem dynamics. Thus, critical ecology aims to address planetary challenges by integrating insights from the natural and social sciences, through different research questions, methodologies, and theoretical backgrounds. And, ultimately, a commitment to equity and sustainability.

This workshop will be an opportunity for researchers of varied disciplines to examine the assumptions and implications of their work and to better understand the interactions between ecological and social processes.
