A Recipe for Fashion Design: How would you like your steak, how would you like your dress?
Tuesday, March 14, 2023 8am to 5pm
About this Event
An Exhibit by Yoon Yang, PhD student in Fiber Science and Apparel Design.
I am a foodie, a cook, and a fashion designer. I usually cook for my friends and family. And they all have different preferences and ‘dietary restrictions’. Therefore, my kitchen has always been experimental. What I do is create the same-tasting dish (i.e., the final dish) with a variety of different ingredients. Similar to the food experimentations due to dietary restrictions, “design restrictions” can be applied to garment ensembles. The new way of creative design with constraints can provide designers more room to express unique high-quality creativity.
A Recipe for Fashion Design will exhibit one introduction video and four garment ensembles designed in my proposed creative fashion design method. The introduction video will explain the basic concept of my design method and its relation to food recipes. Four garment ensembles will be designed to have ‘the same final look’ but be constructed and assembled in unique ways to meet ‘design restrictions’.
The exhibit will be available in MVR 1250 Gallery from 02/07/2023 to 02/17/2023. A collection of physical garments will be in the MVR 1250 Gallery and virtual catwalks of the collection will be available online. Three videos of making garments virtually with 3D CAD software will also be released online.
