DESCRIPTION:The question as to whether Intelligent Design and/or Creationis
 m should be taught along with Evolution in the Biology classroom has been\,
  and remains quite controversial. In order to appreciate the issues involve
 d\, we will discuss both the legal and scientific aspects of the controvers
 y. In particular\, there have been two court decisions relevant to the issu
 e. One of these was decided by the Supreme Court in 1987\, the other was de
 cided in 2005 in Dover\, Pa. We will discuss both of these in some detail. 
 In addition\, we will discuss some of the scientific issues involved and wh
 ere the controversy stands today.  \n\n \n\nThis talk is presented by Profe
 ssor of physics\, Ahren Sadoff. Ahren Sadoff  received his BS in physics fr
 om MIT and his PhD in elementary particle physics from Cornell University. 
 Ahren has been a member of the CLEO collaboration since its inception where
  he was a part of the CLEO-c experiment. He was also the LEPP representativ
 e to the Interactions.org collaboration\; an international group of communi
 cators representing all of the high energy particle accelerator facilities 
 in the world. Throughout his career\, he has been very concerned about the 
 public understanding of science and the poor state of science literacy in t
 he US.  In addition to his love of science\, he has had a continuing intere
 st in the Law\, especially as it pertains to the US Constitution. He finds\
 , that in many ways\, legal and scientific reasoning  are similar. It is th
 is combined interest in both of  these topics that has led him to formulate
  his talk on Evolution and Intelligent design.
