- how the various GM products are made,
- what is out on the market,
- how they are regulated and
- their environmental and economic impact
This is a chance for people interested in food and agriculture to come together, understand, and explore the opportunities and issues of using genetically modified crops in our food system both locally and around the world.
Dr. Shelton’s extensive work includes:
- risk assessment of insect management strategies, especially insect-resistant genetically engineered crops,
- develop more efficient and safer insect management practices
- teaches in both graduate and undergraduate programs on biotechnology in entomology and plant breeding at Cornell University
- director for the Bt Binjal (eggplant) project which the US International Development Agency has funded to support the implementation of insect resistant varieties in Bangladesh and the Philippines
- research use of male-selecting transgenes as a direct species-specific method, where female progeny are unable to survive, to control insect pest populations
This presentation will be held as part of the 14th Annual Garden Day Educational Fair and Plant Sale on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at the Wyoming County Agriculture and Business Center located at the Ag & Business Center, 36 Center Street in Warsaw, New York. Garden Day is a farmer’s market style event, promoting local businesses, small craft vendors, and locally grown plant stock. Our event is presented by the Wyoming County Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Volunteers.
