DESCRIPTION:Noel Lenski (Professor of Classics and History at Yale Universi
 ty) will give a talk entitled "Searching for Slave Teachers in Late Antiqu
 ity: A Brief History of Forced Labor in Ancient Education\," at 4:30 on Oc
 tober 25\, 2019. Professor Lenski focuses on Roman history and particularl
 y the history of the later Roman Empire. He is interested in power relatio
 ns as these played themselves out at all levels of society\, from emperors
  to slaves. His research ranges broadly across Late Antiquity and includes
  studies in political\, military\, social\, economic\, religious\, cultura
 l and art history. His two monographs\, on the emperors Valens and Constan
 tine\, explore the limits of imperial power in light of reader response th
 eory and life-worlds theory. He has also published extensively on the hist
 ory of slavery in antiquity and is currently working on a monograph on sla
 ve law in the later Empire.
