Mike Duncan: talk about Lafayette and Revolutions

Wednesday, October 23, 2019 at 8:00pm to 9:15pm

Telluride House
217 West Ave, Ithaca, NY 14850, USA

"The Marquis de Lafayette is lauded as an advocate of liberty and equality and a lifelong opponent of slavery. But when he purchased a plantation to prove that gradual emancipation was possible...he failed to follow through. He never freed his slaves. What does this complicated legacy mean today? How do we balance approbation and condemnation? Was Lafayette a hero? A villain? Neither? Both?"
