Math Department 2021 Virtual Reunion Events/Activities

Virtual Event

The Math Department will be offering some virtual activities to help celebrate  2021 Virtual Reunion.  Activities will be hosted by Math Department faculty on Friday, June 11th that will include the following:

Event 1:  1:00 - 2:00 p.m., Crocheting Adventures in Math


Crocheting Adventures in Math is hosted by Adjunct Associate Professor (Retired) Diana Taimina.  Learn how the art and craft of crocheting relates to mathematics.  Associate Professor Taimina's publications related to this unique mathematical art and craft includes:

Crocheting Adventures with Hyperbolic Planes

Crocheting Algorithms (with Giesela Baurman)

Join her in this virtual activity as she illustrates this fun and unique craft.

Event 2:  2:00 - 3:00 p.m., History of the Math Department


Join Professor Laurent Saloff-Coste as he shares with you the history of the Math Department.  In 2015 Professor Saloff-Coste was the Chair of the Math Department, and the University was celebrating its sesquicentenial.  During that time, Professor Saloff-Coste thought it would be fun to learn about the history of Cornell and its Department of Mathematics, so he dove into the department and university archives.  Join Professor Saloff-Coste as he shares his findings.

Event 3:  3:00 - 4:00 p.m., Math Circles


Join Assistant Professor Inna Zakharevich in Math Circles (Grades K-2).  Math Clubs and Circles offer grades K-2 students a means to explore mathematics and stimulates students' interest in mathematics and develops students' problem-solving skills.  You can find more information on Math Clubs and Circles by going to  Similar principles will be used as  presented in Math Circles during the academic year, but modified slightly for this particular event.  We welcome all alumni and their accompanying K-2 student attendees.
