DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Among the most consequential environmental hazards\, 
 heat waves are complicated phenomena that involve relationships between th
 e atmosphere\, the land surface\, and the biosphere. In this seminar\, we'
 ll learn about how heat waves are changing across the global land surface\
 , why this might be happening\, and what it means for human exposure to da
 ngerous levels of heat stress.\n\nBio: Lucas Vargas Zeppetello is an assis
 tant professor in the Department of Environmental Science\, Policy\, and M
 anagement. His research focuses on understanding the relationship between 
 novel soil moisture observations\, ecosystem dynamics\, and land surface c
 limate variability.\n\n \n\nThis event is presented as part of the 2024 Pe
 rspectives on the Climate Change Challenge Seminar Series:\n\nMost Mondays
 \, Spring Semester 2024\, 2:55-4:10pmVia ZoomThis university-wide seminar 
 series is open to the public (via Zoom)\, and provides important views on 
 the critical issue of climate change\, drawing from many perspectives and 
 disciplines. Experts from Cornell University and beyond present an overvie
 w of the science of climate change and climate change models\, the implica
 tions for agriculture\, ecosystems\, and food systems\, and provide import
 ant economic\, ethical\, and policy insights on the issue. The seminar is 
 being organized and sponsored by the Department of Biological and Environm
 ental Engineering and Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability.
