DESCRIPTION:"Advancing Second Language Proficiency and Intercultural Compet
 ence in Postsecondary Education"\nLRC Signature Speaker\nLeAnne Spino\nAsso
ciate Professor of Spanish\, Proficiency Coordinator\, and Director of Inte
rnational Studies and Diplomacy\, University of Rhode Island \n\nThis is a
pivotal moment for language programs. Enrollments in languages other than
English are plummeting across the United States. Also in flux is the landsc
ape of higher education more generally. In this climate of uncertainty\, la
nguage programs must be able to clearly and convincingly articulate their v
alue. Yet how can we effectively make these arguments?\n\nThere are\, of co
urse\, many possible strategies for demonstrating and communicating the val
ue of language programs. In this talk\, I will detail one possible approach
\, resulting from a deep realignment across six degree-granting language pr
ograms at the University of Rhode Island that sought to advance students' l
anguage proficiency and intercultural competence. We will explore what thes
e constructs are\, the extent to which they develop in postsecondary studie
s\, and how they can be framed to university leadership\, faculty\, and stu
dents to successfully communicate at least part of the value of a postsecon
dary language education. \n\nBio: Dr. Spino (Spino-Seijas) received her Ph.
 D. from Michigan State University in Second Language Studies. She is curren
tly an Associate Professor of Spanish at the University of Rhode Island and
the Proficiency Coordinator for the Department of Modern and Classical Lan
guages and Literatures\, where she spearheads the Department’s Proficiency
Initiative. This initiative seeks to increase students' language proficienc
 y through faculty training\, large-scale proficiency testing\, and evidence
-based curricular revamping. Dr. Spino is also the Director of the Internat
ional Studies and Diplomacy program\, a dual degree program in which studen
ts major in International Studies and a language\, study abroad for at leas
t a semester\, and reach a high proficiency benchmark in the language they
study before graduation. \nDr. Spino specializes in second language acquisi
tion. Much of her research focuses on issues that impact language teaching
directly. She is particularly interested in the development of second langu
age proficiency and the sociopolitics of language acquisition and pedagogy\
, especially as it pertains to heritage language speakers of Spanish. \n\nT
his event will be held in person in G25 Stimson and will also be streamed l
ive over Zoom (registration required). Join us at the LRC or on Zoom. \n\nT
he event is free and open to the public.
