In Case You Get Lost is an attempt to situate oneself in an unfamiliar and ever-changing environment — Leyla Jha and Darcie Xia (both B.F.A. ’27) are asking what it means to be physically present yet mentally elsewhere. Through a range of media, this body of work reflects on experiences of displacement, transition, and the process of navigating unfamiliarity.

Rather than treating unfamiliar spaces only as sites of discomfort, this collection of work explores how uncertainty can become a starting point for reflection, adaptation, and new forms of connection. Inspired by Sara Ahmed’s concept of disorientation in Queer Phenomenology (2006), Jha and Xia are interested in how this feeling can shift from something uncomfortable and stagnant into something generative. Ahmed describes this as a journey: “being lost is a way of inhabiting space by registering what is not familiar: being lost can in its turn become a familiar feeling.”

Jha and Xia are interested in how loss can be carried, transformed, and reworked into familiarity, and how we orient ourselves when our internal sense of place does not align with our external environment. In Case You Get Lost acts as a bridge between these states of being.
