Beyond Space Charge: Simulating Ultracold Photoemission Beamlines

Beam dynamics codes often approximate the Coulomb interaction with mean-field space charge, which is a good approximation in traditional beams. However, point-to-point Coulomb effects, such as disorder induced heating and the Boersch effect, cannot be neglected in cold, dense beams produced by high brightness photocathodes.  In this talk, I will discuss two methods for simulating cold electron beams, show the impact that point-to-point effects can have on figures of merit like emittance, and discuss how these effects can be approximated in cases where full point-to-point simulation is not feasible.
