Leading Off the Field: Labor-Management Dynamics in the NFL

The National Football League’s Players Association (NFLPA) has over 5,000 current and former players in its membership. JC Tretter ’13 played for nine seasons in the NFL and is now the president of the NFLPA. Focused on helping NFLPA members fight for better wages, benefits, and working conditions, Mr. Tretter is applying many of the labor relations and negotiations skills he learned at Cornell’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations.

In this virtual discussion, Harry Katz, Jack Sheinkman Professor of Collective Bargaining and director of the ILR School’s Scheinman Institute on Conflict Resolution, joins Mr. Tretter to discuss union leadership during a volatile labor-management period.

What you will learn:

  • How the pandemic influenced the NFL’s labor-management dynamic
  • What players want now and how the association is advocating for change
  • How unity and solidarity are built across NFL teams
  • The role that the NFLPA can play in helping set standards for workers in other industries
