Amidst political polarization and a balkanized media landscape, the 2024 election continues to raise thorny questions regarding the role of the media, legal institutions, and the law in American democracy. How can and should media organizations report on threats to democratic values? Does AI-generated audio and visual content pose an existential threat to reporting or justify increased regulation of speech? This conversation with David Folkenflik, A&S ’91 and Zubrow Distinguished Visiting Journalist, and Gautam Hans, Associate Clinical Professor of Law, will explore how journalists and citizens engage with questions of speech and democracy, and what challenges lie ahead.
