DESCRIPTION:Mark Stiles\, NIST\, Gaithersburg\, MD\, will present seminar.
Professor Dan Ralph\, host.\n\nSeminar Title: Spin Current: The Torque Wre
nch of Spintronics\n\nAbstract: Spintronic devices use the spin of the ele
ctron as well as its charge. The current in these devices is spin polariz
ed\, due to the inclusion of ferromagnetic materials\, so that their condu
ctance depends on the state of the ferromagnet. This dependence allows th
ese devices to serve as sensitive magnetic field detectors or as memory el
ements\, in which information is stored in the magnetic state. However\,
not only does the polarized current depend on the magnetic configuration\,
but the spin current can manipulate the magnetic state. This recent deve
lopment has led to rapid progress in novel memory devices. In this talk\,
I mention existing and proposed spintronic devices and describe the varie
ty of ways in which the spin current can manipulate the magnetization. I
focus on the recent emphasis in the field of using spin-orbit coupling to
enhance spin currents. Recent measurements on these systems have shown dr
amatic effects\, but the interpretation of the experiments is still contro
versial\, making it a fast moving exciting field.\n\nPoster available.
