Unconventional electronic order in new classes of kagome metals

In this talk, I will discuss recent progress in exploring broken electronic symmetries in new classes of metals built from kagome structural motifs.  Kagome lattice-derived band structures are known to host a series of features such as Dirac crossings, saddle points, and flat bands at select fillings.  Tuning the Fermi level about these features has long been predicted to stabilize a number of unusual phases, such as orbital antiferromagnetism, bond density wave order, and unconventional superconductivity.  A number of new materials hosting nonmagnetic kagome lattices have recently been identified with band fillings near the Dirac points and Van Hove singularities native to the kagome band structure, and I will focus on the experimental exploration of these systems and the characterization of their electronic/structure phase transitions.   Particular focus will be given to the charge density wave state in the AV3Sb5 (A=K, Rb, Cs) class of kagome superconductors and comparison to its structural cousins.
