Quantitative understanding of moire physics in transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures
Moire superlattices provide a powerful tool to design flat electronic bands for novel correlated quantum phases. In this talk, I will describe our effort to combine ab into calculations, optical spectroscopy, and scanning tunneling microscopy to gain fundamental understanding of the moire flat band and associated electronic, optical, and spintronic phenomena in WS2/WSe2 moire heterostructures. We reveal that three-dimensional lattice reconstruction plays a key role in determining the flat moire minibands in the WS2/WSe2 heterostructure. We show that different moire exciton resonances can exhibit very different electron-hole wavefunctions. We further examine how spin and charge transport can be decoupled in the correlated Mott insulator in the moire heterostructure.
