Title: Magnetism and topology in moiré superlattices
Abstract: Moiré superlattices have proven to be an excellent platform for realizing and exploring new and exotic electronic phases, including a wide variety of magnetic Chern insulators. Magnetic Chern insulators are electronic phases that combine topology and magnetism to produce the quantum anomalous Hall effect, which is a close analogue of the quantum Hall effect that occurs in the absence of a magnetic field. I will discuss recent developments in our study of Chern insulators, using both nanoSQUID magnetic imaging and transport measurements. The Chern insulators discovered over the past few years have turned out to host an array of curious magnetic phenomena that can nevertheless be understood as simple consequences of topological band structure, including topological magnetization, gate- and current-switchable magnetism, and vanishing net magnetization. I will also discuss what we have learned about the unique nature of disorder in moiré superlattices, including how it has impacted the field’s ability to replicate experiments on newly discovered moiré materials and what we might expect from future moiré material systems and devices.
