Virtual EventIntended for individuals who want to keep a few chickens in the backyard for home egg production, this class will be taught by experienced Ithaca backyard flock keeper Margaret Royall who will provide practical advice on successful and satisfying chicken raising. The City of Ithaca and the Villages of Dryden and Trumansburg allow residents to keep a small number of chickens in the back yard (check the specific municipal ordinances for any restrictions). Residents who wish to keep chickens will need a permit and also evidence that you have attended a class on raising chickens. This class will meet that requirement. You must attend the actual class, to receive the certificate. Attendees will receive a letter to take to their municipality. *This class is open to all, not just residents of Ithaca, Dryden and Trumansburg!*
About the instructor: Margaret Royall is the CCE Tompkins Master Gardener Volunteer Program Coordinator. Her past experiences with ecology and conservation heavily influence her gardening favorites for natives and habitat gardening. For over 10 years Margaret has organized and taught volunteers on ecological restoration sites and in school gardens to create landscapes that attract and support wildlife. In addition to gardening, Margaret has kept chickens in the Town of Ithaca, built her own coop, and cared for chickens through some of Ithaca's colder winters.
