The Emperor's Canary, an elegant outdoor sculptural sound art installation, will be located on two proximate symbolic sites: the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art's Rebecca Q. and James C. Morgan Gallery and the Sesquicentennial Commemorative Grove. Seeking to invite participants to join in the duration of sound, the two sites will present different electronic soundtracks whose low volumes solicit attentive listening. The project was created by Professor of the Practice Joanna Malinowska and C. T. Jasper. This past year, the artists featured a different variant of this piece on the High Line in Manhattan; their work also is featured in the Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum's The Message: New Media Works.

Malinowska and Jasper live and work in New York City; Malinowska is a professor of the practice within the art department at AAP. Some of their videos, sculptures, and sound works intertwine historical and geographical narratives in absurd postcolonial fictions.

This exhibition is part of the 2018 Cornell Council for the Arts (CCA) Biennial: Duration: Passage, Persistence, Survival.

The Emperor's Canary was produced in collaboration with the Department of Art and the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art.
