DESCRIPTION:At the most recent Consumer Electronics Show (CES)\, profession
als claimed that “just around the corner are wearables…made from mater
ials that aren’t even in our vocabulary yet.” Experts at the World Eco
nomic Forum in Davos claim the Fourth Industrial Revolution\, which fuses
the biological\, physical\, and digital worlds\, is impacting economies an
d industries while “challenging ideas about what it means to be human.
” Embodied biotechnologies (biowear) promise exciting possibilities for
engaging biofluids\, biological processes\, and bodies in novel ways\, whi
le also bringing unprecedented levels of invasive data gathering and repor
ting bodily states in real time. Little is known\, however\, about these i
nnovations’ socio-technical impacts. Critical studies of less invasive a
nd limited forms of electronic wearable tech (such as fitness trackers\, r
esponsive clothing\, and computerized biosensors) have documented problems
with human data protection\, a lack of diversity in design settings leadi
ng to biased or discriminatory design\, and issues with commercial power d
ynamics forcing normalization of technologies that do not serve consumers.
Despite these clearly documented issues\, there is no study of how these
biases and consumer vulnerabilities within the ecosystem of wearable tech
are affecting the development of embodied biotech. Data is urgently neede
d to find out how this new wave of innovation can avoid the problematic pr
actices currently dominating the field in which biowear is developing.
