Join us for a conversation with Gary Numan, a pioneer of electronic popular music, with hit singles "Are 'Friends' Electric?" and "Cars." Numan is also the recipient of the Ivor Novello Inspiration Award.

Judith Peraino, professor of music at Cornell, is conducting the interview and moderating the discussion.

This keynote is part of When Machines Rock: A Celebration of Robert Moog and Electronic Music, March 5 to 7, featuring panels and performances by a wide array of electronic music artists, including singer-songwriter, beat-maker, and producer Suzi Analogue; and electronic music composers David Borden, Herb Deutsch, and Suzanne Ciani.

Other events include an opening reception for the Cornell University Library exhibit Electrifying Music: The Life and Legacy of Robert Moog, a DIY synth-building workshop, a concert by Cornell’s Electroacoustic Music Center, and shows at the Haunt by the punk-inspired electronic group ADULT and Suzi Analogue.

I was inspired by Gary Numan's candid comments about facing his fears while undertaking new projects. He was certain his most successful recordings were due one mistake or another, certainly not by some innate genius or craft on his part. Given his self-doubt, I was amazed to learn about his precision flying skills, as hesitation or doubt when performing aircraft stunts can likely be deadly. It has been observed "There are old pilots and bold pilots, but no old, bold pilots." Numan possesses a unique introspection that I really enjoyed listening to.
