The Einaudi Center, in collaboration with Cornell Abroad, the Center for Teaching Excellence, the Center for Engaged Learning + Research, and the Office of Academic Diversity Initiatives (OADI), is organizing a one-day internationalization symposium on May 13, 2015 in G10 Biotechnology entitled “Integration of International Experience into the Curriculum.” This symposium—addressed to faculty, staff, and administrative leaders in departments, colleges, and the university—provides a unique opportunity to create awareness; improve our collective thinking; review models and approaches; share ideas and learn from each other; identify challenges, issues, and resource needs; and develop recommendations.

At Cornell new and expanding global programs—such as international internships, service learning programs, and innovative study abroad courses—have been aimed at advancing the president's call to enhance Cornell's excellence in international studies and global engagement by having “meaningful international experiences.” Cornell’s pledge to the national “Generation Study Abroad” initiative has been twofold:

Increase undergraduate participation in education abroad, with at least 50% of undergraduates having a substantive international experience by graduation.

Expand and enhance the number and quality of student opportunities for meaningful international experiences linked to their curriculum.

The upcoming symposium builds on the first internationalization symposium in February 2014, “What Constitutes a Meaningful International Experience?” which started a university-wide conversation aimed at bringing the multitude of efforts in the international arena under the strategic umbrella of the Global Cornell Initiative. One of the strongest takeaways of last year’s symposium was the importance of connecting international experiences and programs to the curriculum. Although we do have several excellent examples from our colleges, many international experiences and programs are not or only partly integrated into the curriculum, while many degree programs do not have any international dimension.

The symposium will include four sessions: 

Session 1: Internationalizing the Curriculum
Session 2: Global Learning Outcomes and Assessment
Session 3: Models and Strategies for Integrating International Experiences
Session 4: Institutional Opportunities and the Challenges of Curriculum Integration

Each session will feature case studies from Cornell's colleges, student and faculty panel discussions, and presentations. We will welcome three external speakers (http://einaudi.cornell.edu/speakers/) from peer universities and experts in the field of international education to benefit from their experiences and lessons learned.
