Around the turn of the 20th century, Cornell professor Ralph Stockman Tarr and his students and collaborators organized several expeditions to glaciated areas in Greenland and Alaska. They returned with a wealth of invaluable data, including thousands of photographs. A few of these images were published in scientific publications, but many of them have never been published or catalogued, and rarely viewed over the past 100 years. Now, some 2,000 of these fascinating photographs are being digitized, in a collaboration between Cornell University Library, Aaron Sachs of the Cornell Department of History, Matt Pritchard of the Cornell Department of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, and Julie Elliot of Purdue University. "Historic Ice", an exhibit in the Mann Library Gallery, features large-scale prints of these magnificent and  haunting photographs, as well as modern images of the same glaciers. Historic Ice will be on display from November 10, 2015 until January 31, 2016.

This exhibit opens on November 10, with the special lecture "Glacier Changes"  by earth & atmospheric sciences professor Matt Pritchard, 4pm in Room 160 on the first floor of Mann Library. A reception in the Mann Gallery will immediately follow the talk.  Both lecture and exhibit are part of a special year-long programming series at Mann Library, intended to foster cross-disciplinary discussion on climate change.

"Historic Ice," is made possible by the support of the Elizabeth E. (Betty) Rowley Fund for Mann Library.
