The Harry Caplan Travel Fellowship Info Meeting is Wednesday, October 8 from 4:30-5:30 pm in Goldwin Smith Hall 122. This is your opportunity to hear about the 2025 Caplan Fellow and meet with one of the professors who reviews Caplan applications and ask them about the application process, their summer travels and studies, and any other questions you may have about the Caplan Travel Fellowship!

If you’re not able to attend the info meeting, you are still welcome to apply. Please feel free to email njg68@cornell.edu and/or rtb95@cornell.edu with questions about the fellowship.

The College of Arts and Sciences announces awards of $5,000 for summer travel to Europe or the Near East. These awards, in honor of one of the College’s most beloved teachers and scholars of classics, are for juniors who have serious and developed interest in some aspect of the subjects Harry Caplan loved: ancient Greek and Roman cultures; medieval Latin literature, especially drama; ancient Jewish culture; and rhetoric. The fellowships are meant to afford students the opportunity to enrich their understanding of classical traditions and their afterlives. Some students propose research projects or participation in a summer program; others propose intense and focused tourism.

Interested juniors should submit a short essay (max. 2 pages, double spaced) outlining the project they would like to use the fellowship for and explaining its background in their studies to date. A committee of the College will select the winners based upon both the short essay and scholarly performance. Students on financial aid should not refrain from applying because Cornell will compensate the expectations for summer earnings.

Essays should be submitted by 11:59 pm November 1, 2025, to Professor Nicole Giannella, Director of Undergraduate Studies (njg68@cornell.edu), CC Ryan Belle (rtb95@cornell.edu). Applicants should be sure to include the following information: full name, NetID, local address, permanent address, and your primary college.
