 ed expansion of the U.S. penal system and reductions in welfare programs t
 hroughout the late twentieth century.\n\nGetting Tough was named one of CH
 OICE’s Outstanding Academic Titles for 2017\, and received Honorable Men
 tion for the 2018 Frederick Jackson Turner Award by the Organization of Am
