Consider this talk an opportunity to meet a few of the invisible citizens living amid the changes brought about by shale gas development in Pennsylvania. Lean in and listen to human voices behind the easy caricatures of the white working class. Look at particularities that underlie the false opposition that pits those who are pro-jobs and pro-energy against those who are pro-environment, and recognize that jobs and energy do not need to be gained at the expense of the environment--unless Marcellus drilling is the only option we consider. See the ways memory and attachment to place can sustain resilience and a determination to work for justice.
