First Reformed is a vital, of-the-moment film, addressing faith, activism, global warming, and late-stage Capitalism. A bald examination of faith and an excoriation of an individual's ability to affect change during a global catastrophe, exemplified by an imperfect man of the cloth (Ethan Hawke, in a remarkably vulnerable performance).
