Escape from the Archive: Encountering History through Performance and Theater
From documentary theatre’s interweaving and performance of archival material to site-specific historical reenactment to the theatrical adaptation of historical events, theatre and performance have long been generative sites of encountering and reanimating the past. Significantly, where the archive is most frequently a textual (though still potentially sensual and affective) engagement with history, theatre and performance offer the opportunity to embody the past, to encounter history in the surrogated flesh. Escape from the Archive is a weekend long conference exploring the theatrical and performative possibilities of the archive through roundtables, lectures, and performances. The full schedule is below, and all events are free and open to the public.
Please email co-organizers Caitlin Kane (cak269@cornell.edu) and Erin Stoneking (ers276@cornell.edu) with any questions about the events.
