DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nEJ Hauser believes that artists are on a mission to e
xplore.\n\nDuring their talk\, Hauser will show images and discuss their ar
t-making in relationship to their desire to visualize what lies beneath the
surface as well as connect to an aliveness.\n\nBiography\nEJ Hauser (they/
she) is a painter who lives and works in Brooklyn and Ulster County\, New Y
ork\, and is represented by Derek Eller Gallery in New York City and Haverk
ampf & Leistenschneider in Berlin.\n\nHauser's paintings are both graphic a
nd open to interpretation\, teetering between iconography and something fam
iliar but abstract. This imagery shifts between omnivorous references both
ancient and current — the paintings are mysterious talismans\, employing bu
zzing pallets and marks that dance. Stuttering lines form a visual code lik
e musical notes\, which coalesce with atmospheric layers to create ineffabl
e messages.\n\nHauser's source library draws from the natural world\, image
ry that is cross-pollinated with the formal qualities found in craftwork li
ke rugs\, fabrics\, wallpapers\, and mosaics\, as well as digital visual ch
aracteristics\, which they interpret through drawing and then transliterate
onto canvas. Each piece is composed of multiple layers of color. \n\nIn 20
23\, Hauser had their second solo show with Haverkampf & Leistenschneider a
s well as solo shows with Parrasch Heinjen in Los Angeles and at Anton Kern
's WINDOW in New York City. Their work has been shown in numerous group exh
 ibitions in New York\, including Cheim & Read\, Sperone Westwater\, Gavin B
rown's Enterprise\, and The Journal Gallery. Hauser 's work has been featur
ed in The New Yorker\, The New York Times\, Frieze\, The Brooklyn Rail\, BO
MB Magazine\, and Turps Banana\, among others.\n\nEJ Hauser is the fall 202
3 Teiger Mentor in the Arts. \n\nCornell University is committed to providi
ng universal access to all of our events. Please contact artdepartment@corn
ell.edu to request disability accommodations. Advance notice is necessary t
