DESCRIPTION:Part of the BCTR’s Talks at Twelve Series.\n\nThe subject of 
 grief and loss is often solely focused on death. However\, there is a rang
 e of grief-related experiences that impact children and adults in various 
 environmental contexts\, including schools. This talk highlights the impor
 tance of addressing grief and loss in schools starting early in the life c
 ourse. We will explore findings from qualitative interviews with nine pres
 chool educators who participated in a health education program during the 
 summer of 2022. The program aims to increase knowledge and skills to suppo
 rt children with loss. Researchers conducted post-intervention follow-up i
 nterviews to learn about the relational changes between educators and the 
 preschool children in their care. Preliminary findings reveal important im
 plications for addressing grief experiences within the preschool context.\
 n\nKeisha M. Wint is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Wo
 rk at Binghamton University and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Her res
 earch interests are based on 20 years of experience as a social work pract
 itioner serving in schools\, communities\, and private practice.\n\nDr. Wi
 nt’s current research focuses on understanding factors that strengthen c
 hild-teacher relationships. She explores the educational experiences of yo
 ung children who have experienced marginalization in schools\, namely Blac
 k preschool boys. Dr. Wint’s recent study includes identifying tools and
  resources for preschool educators to effectively communicate with young c
 hildren about grief-related experiences.\n\nHer goals as a research schola
 r are to collaborate with community stakeholders to develop and execute tr
 anslational research that improves educational outcomes for young children
  starting early in the life course.
